Day 73 … Days till Weigh-In: 14
I think I’m fairly healthy in spite of some obvious
issues. I go for an annual physical w/PCP which includes a full blood work-up, EKG,
etc. I have yearly Gyno, Mamo/Sonograms, Dental check-ups/full set x-rays with cleanings
every 4 months, quarterly visits to the podiatrist (cut my nails, scrap dead
skin), annual eye exam, and monthly infusions (for R.A.) which includes
weigh-in, Monitoring Temp, BP, pulse and periodic blood work. I also [daily] take
nutritional supplements, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise 3 times
per week, get lots of fresh air, drink lots of water, and I now maintain a
reasonable caloric intake. The only recommended procedure I haven’t had is the colonoscopy.
I’m 50 and so my PCP says it’s time to have this (and then every 10 years
after). I just don’t get the logic of a mandatory medical exam every 10 years…. An annual
exam I totally get, but every decade? And -- as we get older, you get them less
frequently.. really? I figure I’ve got 4 full decades left on planet earth –
and truthfully I’d prefer not spending
any part of that with a camera up my ass. And statistically speaking: in 2010 (last
available census figures) the population was 308 Mil with 164 Mil females.
There were 63,907 woman diagnosed with Colorectol cancer that year. That’s a fraction of 1% - which is
remarkably low. Allow me to give you an analogy: The CDC and The American
College of Rheumatology estimates that there are 1.3-1.5 million Americans with
R.A., that’s a fraction of 1%. That number is so low that there is no budget
for finding a cure. It’s simply not that great a concern. However, the really big
money (really big) is spent annually by drug companies for R&D… as you
would expect..
I wouldn’t say that my health is great, but under the circumstances I would say its ‘good’ and getting better
every day. I think about good health a lot and what it takes to achieve it. How
can I maintain an excellent quality of life both physically and mentally as I age?
In the same way that I have financial
goals for retirement, I also have health goals that I work towards every single
day – always pushing forward, always reaching higher. I know for a fact that we
are never too old to better ourselves. I’ve seen a lot of evidence to support
this.
I’d like to share with you a Quiz I recently came across
(link below). “Dr. Oz’ How Healthy Are you” Quiz. I really like the Q&A format and Dr. Oz
asks questions that most PCPs don’t think to ask, and he has a team of Medical
Specialists that respond to any potential concern. Answer as thoughtfully as
you can – you’re the only one who will see the results.
