Darkness descends upon the land…




Busy and totally productive day today. I woke up about 2am and couldn’t get back to sleep until 3:30ish. I think it’s a combination of decompression, oversleep and daylight savings that’s throwing me off – like jet lag. But it was nice to wake up to daylight – only wish it would stay this way year round… Left work before 4:30pm today (it'll take me a few days to get use to the darkness - i'll ease myself into it). :)

For any unaware (and judging by google comments there are lots of youngins unaware)..., daylight savings time (DST) went into effect in the U.S. way back in 1918 due to an energy crisis and war. Since then it's been hotly contested by many but still remains in force today [in all States except Hawaii and Arizona] because the powers that be and most American’s polled say they prefer more daylight during summer evenings. Hard to argue. So as we head into the ‘cold weather months’ - darkness descends upon the land about 5pm. I wish we could have it both ways – but sadly we cannot.

All this to say that Vitamin D is such an important nutrient that has the potential to dramatically effects everyone's mood. November 2nd was International Vitamin D Day so here's some information in honor of that. The lack of Vitamin D is prevalent during cold weather months when most of us are deficient due to the lack of sunlight (which is necessary to manufacture Vitamin D in our bodies) so it’s very important to supplement Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) during the winter. If you want an accurate reading of your vitamin D level, be sure to ask your doctor to give you ‘25-hydroxy Vitamin D’ test because it’s the most accurate –and best to be at the top of the range. This way you maintain a healthy mood all year round! Meanwhile…
