3/17... Just the Facts

Have you ever misread the nutritional fact label on a package of food only to find out later that it contains more calories than you originally thought? Well, many people have. The food industry has been using the same ‘nutritional fact’ format on packaged foods since 1990. This template was a fine starting point, but Americas eating habits have changed dramatically over the years since, which has created a peculiar problem that is especially noticeable with energy dense foods such as cookies, cakes, chips, etc. The calorie counts on these foods have steadily increased to the point where the old format just isn’t practical anymore.

Take the Fig Newton for example: a quick glance at the nutritional facts panel of a 2 cookie pack lists calories 100. If I look no further, I miss the fact that 100 calories is per cookienot per package. The “serving size” is listed as 1 cookie.  This label confusion wouldn't trip up an educated consumer but the fact is, for every one of those there are many more who are not. So on 2/27/2014 the FDA put forth (and will certainly get some version of) this updated nutritional label:                                                                                                             


 

This is a nice upgrade that trumpets the calorie count of each serving as well as the number of serving per package. I like it.
