3/23... Super Support...

Day 70                                                                        Total Calories:  1840
                                                                                    Days till Weigh-In: 18

One of the topics we discussed over dinner last night (besides socialist medicine) was having a good support system for the different journeys we go through in life. Having a great support system in place makes any task that much easier. I am a strong proponent of support groups and anything else that instills accountability and teamwork. As a matter of fact, a 1999 study by the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10028217  showed those participants who were recruited for a weight loss study with friends experienced a significantly higher success rate both during the weight loss phase and beyond. What outstanding news that is. And it’s applicable to all of life’s challenges.

I consider myself very fortunate to work for a company that makes nutritional supplements. Our focus as a corporation is always on physical health, fitness and of course nutrition. So naturally I supplement daily. But what’s really cool about working here is that anyone who wants to lose weight, get in shape, get healthy, or all of the above has a built-in support system at their disposal. They offer a wide variety of programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle. I can go walking everyday with co-workers (many employees have 30 minute lunch in the cafeteria then go walking for 30 minutes). The company sponsored walking club offers incentives for reaching distance goals which is really cool. Bike and swim clubs are great evening and weekend programs. The annual health fair offers a free comprehensive health assessment along with numerous programs to help employees reach individual health goals (smoking cessation, weight-loss, diabetes 101, stress management, healthy fitness, healthy eating habits, healthy nutrition, etc.). They pay employee’s $75.00 (gift card) just for completing the health assessment form on-line and even offer $200 towards annual gym membership.

Truth is, most businesses today offer health and wellness programs of some kind – and chances are some programs most employees don’t even know aboutDefinitely worth checking out.
