The Heat is On

No joke. Temps in the 90s along with a blast of humidity has descended on the region, again.
This weather makes going out for lunch a little less enjoyable. It’s stifling out there. But life must go on. I am having a good ‘food’ day. Calories right where they need to be. I’ll do a nice walk this evening (indoors). Unfortunately the air quality here on Long Island isn’t good enough to withstand high temps and humidity. I haven’t received an Air Quality ‘smog’ Alert -  yet (surprising) but nonetheless, I’m walking indoors.

For strength training, I’m considering joining a health club to get some weight training and guidance. I have special requirements because of Rheumatoid Arthritis so I need a trainer that understands the challenges involved and can create an effective program for me. I’m always amazed when I see athletes with R.A. (especially golfers and such who are my age) who take the meds and feel better and then keep up the same pace as before. They still run, jump, swing hard, slide, etc. I’ve spoken to a couple Rheumatologists about this and they all say the same thing. Just because you ‘can’ doesn’t mean you ‘should’. That’s the problem with medicine and orthopedic solutions. Sometimes – they makes you feel so good that you forget you were ever in pain – then you treat your joints as if they haven’t been compromised and inevitably a price is going to be paid. It happens all the time. As for me, I’ve decided to go in the opposite direction. I actually baby my joints. The only ‘bad’ thing that I’ve done deliberately is waited entirely too long to lose weight.

From Dr. Oz:

6. Reduced Joint Pain

Being overweight puts huge pressure on your joints. For each extra pound of excess weight on your body, you add 3 times that amount of pressure on your knees. This means that 10 extra pounds equates to 30 pounds of pressure grinding down. And when walking up stairs, multiply your extra weight by 7. Thirty pounds of pressure just became 70 pounds. Over time, this force wears away your cartilage, leaving an area of arthritis.

As you lose weight and reduce the pressure on your joints, the cushioning between your bones will build back up. A 10 pound weight loss over 10 years may result in as much as a 50% decrease in your odds of developing osteoarthritis.

Enough said!
