Grocery Store Tours Teach Residents to Shop Healthy on a Budget

I recently came across an article that discussed a very interesting new educational program in Kansas. Here you go:

Eating healthy is a struggle for most of us, but a new program at local grocery stores is focusing on making healthy nutrition easier and quicker.

"Shopping is a really stressful thing and a lot of people just don't have a lot of time," said Beta Kashani, an Ameri Corp Member at Lawrence Douglas County Health Department

According to local health officials, the first thing to go out the door when you're feeling stressed is healthy eating habits. For that very reason, the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department is now offering tours at local grocery stores; to help you shop healthy, cheap, and fast.

"How to buy produce in season, how to buy in bulk to save money, we talk about canned goods and the nutrition benefits, how to limit sodium and sugar in fruits and vegetables, how to get good sources of protein by looking at beans and nuts and things like that, " said Kashani.

And get ready to put what you hear during the tour to the test because your tour guide will then give you $10 to put your new knowledge to use.

"We want them to get an item from each food group we talk about and then try to create a meal out of that," said Kashani.

Health officials will then discuss your meal with you and what you could do to make it healthier or cheaper or both. Those who have taken the tour so far say they are a big fan of the educational opportunity.

"I didn't know about unit pricing. I just sort of grab whatever as long as the price is low," said Katie Uhde, a tour participant, "Now I'm always going to try to use half of my budget to buy fruits and vegetables and I going to try to incorporate other types of protein like canned chicken."

While this is in Kansas and has not made an appearance on Long Island, I am hopeful that this trend will catch on. It is after all a wonderful idea.
